Guess the breed

About 11 years ago my dad was at Wal-mart and saw a guy giving away puppies in the parking lot.  Much to the surprise of the rest of our family he was unable to return home without one.

This is Gus.  We don't really know what he is but the guy mentioned something about the mother being Rottweiler and Great Pyrenees.  He weighs about 100 lbs and has double hind dewclaws.  So what do you think he might be?

This looks like a good case for a DNA test. He is a beautiful and interesting looking dog.

I could buy the Pyr, based on the general facial structure and expression. I was skeptical about Rott, but the tail actually is similar to an undocked Rott. Very interesting color. He's a handsome dog.

I think he looks like a blackmouth cur, and I think that rear dew claws are standard for that breed. It would be an interesting DNA test, for sure.

I want to play guess the breed....how about Mastiff/Afghan hound???? LOL

Color definitely seems off for a Rott/Great Pyr. I would think maybe some Mastiff (Bull or otherwise) based on size and coloring.

I'd vote for some Rhodesian Ridgeback in there, such a pretty red color and the head/face look kind of "ridgey."

Does anyone see any Anatolian Shepherd? Just a thought.

he does resemble an Anatolian, but the coat doesn't look dense enough from the photo.
Do you have any behavioral clues?

When Gus was younger he played very rough. He is very territorial of his yard and protective of family members particularly when other animals approach the yard. He gets along with only those animals he was introduced to when very young. Can't be fully trusted around strange animals coming into the yard. He is friendly with people that he sees regularly welcomed by the family. When away from the yard he is very calm, patient, and more tolerant of strange animals.

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that I was looking through your blog at the "Top Pomeranians" where Lyric ranks 27th, and I run Fizzles Lucky Break, #26 :) Nice to meet you! Your pom is adorable and reminds me of mine, also a rescue.

Hey Abigail-thank for stopping by! Nice to hear from another Pom person, and a rescue too! There is only one other pom running around here, lots of times Lyric is the only one at a trial. I hope to move her up a little in the ranks over the next year or two. Good luck to you.
